Dude. This movie. I’m pretty sure it’s the best thing ever.

The Bunny Game (2010) | Director: Adam Rehmeier
Holy shit, this movie looks SO GOOD. Extreme psychological horror + method acting + no blood. SIGN ME UP.
Official review at Brutal As Hell: http://www.brutalashell.com/2011/03/film-review-the-bunny-game/
Shot entirely in black and white with a minimum of dialogue, The Bunny Game is so sickening, so disturbing and so unforgivingly raw that it ultimately leaves an unforgettable afterimage of ethereal beauty on your burned out eyeballs, once it’s done wringing your soul out like an old dishrag that is. It’s a deeply twisted and strangely uplifting religious experience, one that can be identified and appreciated by anyone who’s ever been beaten down to their base core and had to pick themselves up afterwards. I’ve never suffered as either Getsic or Bunny did, but I recognized that look on her face. I’m still haunted by it, almost a week later. Now THAT is pure horror: stripped, skinned and laid bare. It doesn’t get much more pure than this. (Annie Riordan)
Interview with Adam Rehmeier and co-writer/actress Rodleen Getsic: http://www.brutalashell.com/2011/02/the-bunny-game-an-ecstatic-vision-quest-of-torture-death-and-rebirth/
After it was all said and done, I was battered, beaten to a pulp. I had frayed metal stuck into my skin because we were at an old junkyard and I was just totally burned, bruised, and cut. I had actually arranged to directly go to The Canyon Ranch, which is a really intense retreat center with doctors on staff, and I stayed there a week with the doctors and they treated my wounds. I had a massage therapist, who was also a physical therapist, and she worked with me every day for about four days a week for two months to get me back. I was pretty tattered after the event. For me I really underwent a death. (Rodleen Getsic)
I’m sure there are plenty of feminists I know who are horrified by how awesome I think/hope this film is, but look: I’ve worked in the sex industry, as does The Bunny Games’ protagonist. It is frequently brutal, dehumanizing, and demoralizing in ways that can never be adequately described to somebody who hasn’t been there. And yet Hollywood and mainstream media choose to glamorize this every. fucking. time. This is a movie that explores that degradation, that dark, awful, feeling, in a way that is meant to horrify, not titilate. And I am ALL for that.
Applicable quote goes here:
Hollywood remakes, nonetheless, that capitalize on the notoriety of rape and revenge of the original films and do absolutely nothing to further the genre. The rape scenes in these films are beyond graphic, and the thought of people sitting around watching this shit on a playback monitor while drinking Starbucks and eating craft service is possibly even more disturbing. I guess unremitting rape and callous behavior is okay with the BBFC as long as the victim exacts revenge on the tormentor, which, in reality, is never the case. The Bunny Game is a journey through several days in the life of a prostitute and is grounded in reality. It is grim and, as with most abductions, the ending is far from happy. (Adam Rehmeier)

trailer for Art/Crime, a 2011 Canadian documentary about the Remy Couture case. I’m all over this! I can’t wait until it’s available on DVD, since I can’t exactly go to Quebec to see it in a theatre.

I should probably note that the previous two video posts are unrated, NSFW, and will almost certainly get you fired and/or kicked off the computer at the public library. The more you know!

Inner Depravity: Short Film II | Director: Remy Couture
This is the second film that Canada has their knickers all a-twist about. The FX are light years better in this installment (the worm-ridden dismembered vag at the opening of the segment is some of the best horror FX I’ve seen in ages) but the film itself is so self-consciously artsy that it almost seemed like watching an extended-play black metal video. (Music still by CMI bands, and still great. The ritual ambient stuff at the beginning was awesome.) Not my favorite of the two. Certainly a great demo of his mad FX skills, though, which was the point. I thought the cannibal murderous little kid was a nice touch, too. (Though probably part of the reason for his arrest.)

Inner Depravity: Short Film I | Director: Remy Couture
Want to be incensed about something? Remy Couture, a horror FX designer from Canada, is currently pending obscenity (“corruption of morals”) charges for the above film, which originally was shown on his website, showcasing his FX and design work. He’s facing jail time because of stupid fucking censorship which claims that the above film, which fits neatly in the artsy body horror genre (also called endurance horror or torture horror) is pornography and has no artistic merit. I’ll leave the analysis up to you, but here are my thoughts:
1. IMHO, the film clearly has artistic merit. It’s very artfully made and clearly intended to scare and disgust, not arouse. (Also, the soundtrack from Cold Meat Industry bands is bitchin’ in the extreme.)
2. Censorship is bullshit, across the board. Clearly, no actors were actually hurt in making this film. As long as all were willing participants, what’s the problem? If people don’t like watching extreme horror, they can abstain from fucking watching it.
